A “must-read” for college freshmen,
But as Kelci Lucier states in her new book, “College Stress Solutions”, you don’t have to be stressed just because you are in a stressful environment; the key is learning how to identify the sources of stress, and develop effective coping strategies so you can handle these issues long before you become “a stressed-out, burned-out mess”. Realizing that problems with homesickness require a much different set of solutions than confusion about choosing a major, the author has broken the book into chapters that deal with each of the most common areas of stress and provide clear, step-by-step suggestions to put you back in control of the situation. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of action plans that are especially useful for time-challenged students and parents.
My Take: I found this book to be an excellent resource for any student heading off to college. I appreciated the author’s style of asking the questions at the start of each chapter to help define what is causing the stress. For example, if a student is feeling overwhelmed by a difficult class, it is important to determine if the area of stress is the class material itself, the inability to connect with the professor, a time-management issue, a personal issue like lack of sleep or social distractions, or simply unrealistic expectations. Each problem has its own set of strategies, and I found the author’s suggestions to be very clear and helpful.
Underlying all of this advice is a thread of practicing good self-care—proper sleep, exercise, and nutrition– and managing expectations appropriately. She notes that one of the biggest challenges of being in college is “constant assault on your comfort zone”. College stress is inevitable, but with the right tools it becomes a catalyst for growth. One quote that particularly resonated with me was “don’t let your biggest regret of college be that you had no regrets. Not failing in something you cared about…means you never challenged yourself in a way where failure was an option”.
I found myself wishing I had this resource when I sent my own two children off to college; even if you only have time to read the summaries I believe the information in this book can help anticipate and prevent some of the most commons sources of anxiety for college students. You’ll find yourself flipping back to this book for helpful guidance throughout your college experience.
